"Lithuania, with its dark forests and marshes, and the Chodkiewicz family, unattractive, prone to anger but raging far in statesmanship - these are a rare convergence of land and people. One might say that the Chodkiewicz family, like a race of lions, protected their country through the ages, never leaving their weapons out of reach" (A.Trachewski).

Birth records, marriage records and death records were found in the Central Archive of Vilnius, the Historical Archive of Vilnius and the Family History Centers of the Church of the Last Day Saints. Other references are the 'Encyclopedia Lithuanica', 'Naruszewicz : Historia Jana Karola Chodkiewicza, Warszawa 1805', 'Wolff : Senatorowie i dygnitarze Wielkiego Ksiestwa Litewskiego,  Krakow 1885'.

The Chodkiewicz family is a Lithuanian princely family, that held many high positions of state in Lithuania : marshal, castellan, governor (elder), hetman, grand hetman, palatine, ... . Emperor Charles V granted the title of Count of the Roman Empire to the whole family.

Some sources mention Borejko Chodzko, chamberlain to Grand Duke Vytenis (1295 to 1316). Surnames were not used in that time, but apparently later in history, the name Chodzko became a surname, and is used as such until now.

The founder of the Chodkiewicz family is Chod(z?)ko Juriewicz who served Grand Duke Svitrigaila (1430 - 1432) of Lithuania. It is supposed (but not proven) that Borejko Chodzko and Chodko Juriewicz were related.

In the early periods no surnames were used. Chodko Juriewicz means literally 'Chodko son of Juri'. Chodko's son was named Iwan Chodkiewicz meaning 'Iwan son of Chodko', and Iwan's son Aleksander should have been Aleksander Iwanowicz meaning ' Aleksander son of Iwan' (Iwan = Jan).

After adopting Christianity in te 14th - 15th centuries, surnames gradually were introduced by many Lithuanian nobles. That's why Iwan's son was called Aleksander Chodkiewicz in stead of Aleksander Iwanowicz. From then all descendants of Chodko Juriewicz were called 'z domu Chodkiewicz' or simply Chodkiewicz.

After that he entered the service of the Grand Duke of Lithuania. In 1558 Jan Chodkiewicz was made Hetman and sent to defend Livonia against Tsar Ivan IV 'the Terrible' who was trying to enforce a passage to the Baltic Sea. With the help of Michal Radziwill, Chancelor of Lithuania, he succeeded in attaching Livonia to Lithuania. But this territory remained for long the main target of Russian attacks. In 1564 he became Elder of Samogitia, in 1566 Grand Marshal of Lithuania and Administrator of part of Livonia (with headquarter at Sigulda near Riga), and in 1574 Castellan of Vilnius. As his uncle he was a strong opponent to the Union of Lithuania with Poland. King Zygmunt August was transferring many Lithuanian territories to Poland (Podlesie, Volynia, Kievan Rus), and in Lublin in 1569 (Union of Lublin) he succeeded formally to found one integrated nation out of the Polish-Lithuanian federation. The Lithuanian delegation to the meetings preparing the Act of Union was led by Chodkiewicz, who insisted in a long impassioned speech on the equality and independence of the two nations. Finally "bowing to the king's power, he pointed out those parts of the Act of Union which were unacceptable to Lithuania and he stated that he yielded to the King's will only with the deepest sorrow" (Encyclopedia Lithuanica). In practice Lithuania retained its own government and laws until the end of the joint state in 1795. The Act of Union was never rigorously enforced.
